President Donald Trump has seemingly confirmed that a senior FBI official is preparing to step down from his post, suggesting the deputy director wishes to resume his career in conservative media.
Trump's Tarmac Remarks Hint at Departure
While speaking to reporters on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday, Donald Trump addressed speculation surrounding Dan Bongino, the deputy director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The President told the gathered press that "Dan did a great job" and indicated he believes Bongino "wants to go back to his show".
These remarks align with a report published earlier that same day by the outlet MS Now. The publication stated that Bongino had quietly informed confidants of his intention to formally leave his position early in the new year. According to eight sources briefed on the matter, Bongino is not expected to return to the FBI's headquarters this month.
Timing and Bongino's Reported Plans
The individuals cited by MS Now also revealed that Bongino, who serves as the number two official at the FBI under Director Kash Patel, had considered announcing his departure on Friday, 19 December. When contacted for comment by the reporting outlet, Bongino himself offered a cryptic response: "Print whatever you’d like. No one believes you anyway. Thanks."
Bongino's appearance at a Department of Justice news conference regarding an arrest in the January 6 pipe bombing case on 4 December was one of his last notable public engagements in the role. A photograph from that event captured him alongside other officials.
From Law Enforcement to Media Personality
Prior to his appointment at the FBI, Dan Bongino built a diverse career spanning law enforcement and political commentary. A former Secret Service agent and NYPD officer, he later transitioned into media.
His broadcasting experience includes guest-hosting slots on popular conservative programmes such as The Sean Hannity Show and The Mark Levin Show. He is also the founder of The Dan Bongino Show podcast and the Bongino Report website, platforms to which his return is now anticipated.
The Guardian has contacted the FBI for an official statement regarding the deputy director's future. This potential departure marks another significant moment for the bureau under the current administration.
