It's official! Camden is getting its own £1 billion answer to Hollywood. Lights, cameras, and action are coming to the Camden Film Quarter, a massive new movie hub that has just received planning permission from the local council. The project, dubbed 'Canal-ywood' by enthusiasts, is set to transform the NW1 area into a dedicated neighborhood for the big and small screens.
A £1 Billion Vision
Real estate investment firm Yoo Capital, known for their work on west London's Olympia, is behind the ambitious masterplan. The project will create a new creative ecosystem encompassing studio space for TV and film productions, educational partnerships with the National Film and Television School and the London Screen Academy, workshop spaces, new housing including affordable options, and new public areas. Visitors will also enjoy studio tours.
Simon Lear, managing director of Camden Film Quarter, stated: 'Alongside world-class creative industry facilities, the project will deliver 485 homes, including 243 affordable homes, significant new public open space, education facilities supporting more than 500 learners, new jobs and long-term investment into Kentish Town.'
Lloyd Lee, managing partner of Yoo Capital, added: 'Camden Film Quarter is much more than a film studio development. It is a complete creative ecosystem that brings together production, education, employment, homes, culture and public space within a single integrated vision.'
A Thriving Screen Presence
The borough is already a popular movie location, featuring in recent films such as Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, Steve McQueen's Blitz, Paddington 3, and the Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black. The new quarter promises to further cement Camden's status as a cinematic hub.
London's greatest canal-side cinema is also returning this summer, completely free. Stay updated with the best of the city by signing up for the Time Out London newsletter.
