Usyk steps away from heavyweight titles
Oleksandr Usyk has vacated his WBO and WBC heavyweight world title belts, the sanctioning bodies confirmed on Friday. The Ukrainian fighter, who became the undisputed heavyweight champion in 2024, said he is not retiring from boxing but needs time to consider his next steps.
Reasons behind the decision
Usyk, 39, has not fought since his victory over Tyson Fury in December 2025. In a statement, he explained that the decision was made to allow other fighters in the division to compete for the titles. "I have achieved everything I set out to do in the heavyweight division," Usyk said. "I am not retiring; I am simply giving others the opportunity to fight for the belts while I take a break and reflect on my future."
Impact on the heavyweight division
The WBO and WBC have announced that their respective titles will now be contested by the next highest-ranked contenders. The WBO has ordered a fight between Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang for the vacant belt, while the WBC is expected to sanction a bout between Deontay Wilder and Anthony Joshua. Usyk's decision reshapes the heavyweight landscape, potentially leading to a new era of champions.
What's next for Usyk?
Usyk's promoter, Alex Krassyuk, indicated that the fighter may move up to the cruiserweight division or explore other opportunities. "Oleksandr is a legend who has nothing left to prove in the heavyweight division," Krassyuk said. "He might return to cruiserweight or even consider a fight at heavyweight if something special comes up." Usyk's record stands at 24-0 (14 KOs), and he remains one of the most decorated boxers in history.
