Arteta Lauds Raya's 'Heartstopping' Heroics in Arsenal's Narrow Victory
Mikel Arteta revealed his heart almost stopped before David Raya's spectacular late save preserved Arsenal's 2-1 win over Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium, a result that keeps the Gunners five points clear at the Premier League summit. The Spanish goalkeeper produced a series of exceptional stops in a tense encounter, but it was his alert intervention to push Alejandro Garnacho's dangerous cross wide in the dying moments that proved decisive.
Raya's Leadership and Focus Prove Pivotal
"David is one of our leaders and he's a keeper that knows how to maintain his focus and decide a football match when you need it," Arteta emphasized. "Sometimes he doesn't participate at all and then in one action you have to be there, and that's very difficult to do. The save in the last action, it's a cross from Garnacho, it's not a shot, but it ended up being an unbelievable shot. My heart almost stopped, but David's hand was there to bring it back to life."
Raya's heroics ensured goals from William Saliba and Jurriën Timber secured three crucial points for Arsenal, who have played one game more than closest rivals Manchester City. The victory came despite what Arteta described as poor game management in the final period, with the manager vowing to address this issue ahead of Wednesday's trip to Brighton.
Chelsea's Discipline Problems Continue
Chelsea's challenges were compounded when Pedro Neto received two yellow cards in just four minutes during the second half, reducing the visitors to ten men. This marked Chelsea's ninth red card across all competitions this season, prompting head coach Liam Rosenior to demand immediate improvement in his team's discipline.
"As a group, me as the leader as well, we have to take more accountability for the decision-making in terms of our discipline and the goals we conceded," Rosenior stated. He expressed particular frustration with Neto and Enzo Fernández earning bookings for dissent, adding: "We need to do something. I need to speak to the coaching staff, the staff around the club, the players, because it's not acceptable."
Title Race Tension Builds
Arteta acknowledged the mounting pressure as the season reaches its climax, with Arsenal seeking their first Premier League title in two decades. "I'll try to stay calm," he said. "When you see the other teams are winning games everybody's suffering. The margins are so small, so it's good."
The manager also revealed Declan Rice is a doubt for the Brighton match, adding another layer of complexity to Arsenal's title push. Meanwhile, Chelsea's defeat leaves them outside the top five, with Rosenior facing significant challenges in addressing both defensive vulnerabilities and disciplinary issues that have plagued their campaign.
