According to prominent football journalist David Ornstein of The Athletic, Chelsea's decision was influenced by a strategic desire to prioritise the development of their own young talent. 'Chelsea were interested in him, they evaluated a short-term deal for him,' Ornstein explained during an appearance on Sky Sports. 'Ultimately, they decided not to crack on with that and they are going to prioritise the likes of Andrey Santos and their existing options.'
Luiz's Unwavering Desire for Villa Return
A key factor in the collapsed move was Douglas Luiz's own unwavering preference. Ornstein revealed that the midfielder was singularly focused on a return to Aston Villa, where he enjoyed a successful five-year spell before his departure. 'I spoke to so many people who said for Douglas Luiz it was only Aston Villa, he was fixated on it, he obviously had such fond memories from his previous spell,' Ornstein stated.
The journalist added context to Luiz's original exit from Villa, suggesting it was driven by the club's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) situation at the time, rather than a desire to leave. He also recalled Villa's firm resistance to multiple bids from Arsenal in a previous transfer window, a period after which Luiz demonstrated his commitment by signing a new contract.
