England Dominate with Root's Century
Joe Root struck an unbeaten 142 as England dominated the opening day of the third Test against New Zealand at Headingley, reaching 315-4 at stumps. Root's 24th Test century anchored the innings after England won the toss and elected to bat.
Solid Partnerships Build Platform
Opener Zak Crawley contributed 78 before falling to Tim Southee, while Harry Brook added 56 in a 112-run partnership with Root. The pair's stand of 112 for the third wicket took the game away from New Zealand.
New Zealand's bowlers toiled on a flat pitch, with Southee taking 2-62 and Matt Henry 1-68. The hosts will look to build a substantial first-innings lead on day two.
New Zealand Struggle for Breakthroughs
Despite early wickets, New Zealand failed to contain England's scoring rate. Root brought up his century off 158 balls, his first in Tests since July 2024. England captain Ben Stokes was unbeaten on 23 at the close.
According to former England captain Michael Vaughan, "England's batting depth is remarkable, and Root's form is a huge positive for the team."
