Manchester United have reportedly approached the agent of Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez to discuss an ambitious move for the striker, according to Argentine journalist Marcos Duran. The 26-year-old Argentina international has made it clear he wants to leave Atletico this summer, with Barcelona his 'dream' destination.
Alvarez's preference for Barcelona
Alvarez broke his silence this week, stating publicly his desire to leave the Spanish capital. 'I spoke with the people I needed to speak with and the best thing for everyone is a transfer. I want to fulfil my dream,' Alvarez said after Argentina's 2-0 win over Austria. His comments did not go down well at Atletico, with the club already furious with Barcelona for what they regard as a very public pursuit of the player. Atletico have blasted the Catalan giants on social media and plan to report them to Fifa over their conduct.
Arsenal and PSG talks
Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain have both held talks to sign Alvarez, but as it stands, the striker will not consider a move anywhere other than the Camp Nou. Atletico have no intention of selling to Barcelona this summer and have tried in vain to steer him towards Arsenal or PSG. Reports in Spain claim Atletico explored a move that would see Alvarez join Arsenal in exchange for €60m (£51.7m) plus Viktor Gyokeres. However, Alvarez's determination to join Barcelona has seen Arsenal 'completely rule out' a move for the striker.
United's approach
With the situation complex and ongoing, Argentine journalist Marcos Duran reports that United have joined the chaos, claiming they have spoken 'directly' with Alvarez's agent. The former Manchester City star has already reportedly said no to a proposed move to Arsenal. Alvarez's determination to join Barcelona would suggest any approach from United would be an extremely hopeful one. Atletico are reportedly demanding £130m for the striker, who has a contract until 2028.
