A40 Westway Reopens After Critical Safety Work, but Weekend Closures Loom
The A40 Westway, a major artery in West London, is set to reopen to traffic tonight, Tuesday, April 21, following a planned month-long closure for essential safety upgrades. The shutdown, which began on March 20, allowed engineers to replace structural joints on the route between Westway roundabout and the Marylebone flyover, addressing components that had reached the end of their service life.
Continued Disruption with Weekend Closures
Despite the reopening, Transport for London (TfL) has announced that four weekend closures will be implemented between Friday, April 24, and Monday, June 1. These closures will focus specifically on the Westway roundabout area, with full shutdowns scheduled from 10pm on Fridays to 5am on Mondays.
The full list of closure dates is as follows:
- Westbound: April 24 to April 27
- Westbound: May 8 to May 11
- Westbound: May 15 to May 18
- Eastbound: May 29 to June 1
Essential Infrastructure Improvements
TfL emphasized that the recent work involved replacing two critical joints on the Marylebone Flyover section of the A40 Westway. These joints are vital for allowing the flyover to safely expand and contract in response to temperature fluctuations and vehicle movements, ensuring long-term operational safety and reliability.
Stuart Harvey, TfL's Chief Capital Officer, stated: “We’re pleased to confirm that the A40 Westway will be open to the public from this evening. We know the full closure has caused disruption, and I’d like to thank road users and local communities for their patience while this essential work was completed to one of London’s busiest routes.”
The improvements are part of an ongoing series of works carried out by TfL over recent years to maintain the infrastructure of this heavily trafficked road. By addressing these issues now, TfL aims to reduce future disruptions and enhance the road's performance for commuters and residents alike.
Motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly during the upcoming weekend closures, as alternative routes may be necessary. The phased approach allows for continued access during weekdays while minimizing long-term impact on travel.
