London's morning commute has been thrown into disarray today, Friday 16 January 2026, after two major Tube lines were hit by partial suspensions. The disruption comes just as rush hour was beginning, leaving many passengers scrambling for alternative routes.
Which Lines Are Affected?
The issues stem from separate problems on the District and Northern lines. On the District line, there is currently no service between Earl's Court and Wimbledon. Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed this is due to a late finish of engineering work at Parsons Green station.
Simultaneously, the Northern line is experiencing a significant blockage on its northbound branch. Emergency engineering work has halted trains between Kennington and Battersea Power Station, as well as on the branch via Charing Cross to Camden Town.
What Are The Alternatives For Commuters?
In response to the disruption, TfL has announced that tickets are being accepted on local bus services along the affected routes. Passengers are being encouraged to check for bus alternatives while engineers work to resolve the problems.
It is worth noting that outside of these specific sections, both lines are reported to be running normally. The rest of the extensive TfL network, including the Overground, buses, and other Tube lines, is also operating to its usual schedule.
Looking Ahead
While such disruptions are an unfortunate reality of maintaining a century-old network, the timing during the morning peak will cause significant inconvenience. Commuters are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and to check the TfL website or app for live updates before travelling.
