The Yellow Bittern, one of London's most acclaimed and unconventional restaurants, is making a significant change to its famously limited schedule. The cash-only King's Cross bistro, which has operated solely for lunch with a single 1pm seating and remained closed on weekends, will now open its doors in the evening for the first time. However, this new availability is strictly confined to Friday nights from 7pm to 9:30pm, starting May 8 and continuing through the summer.
A Wine Bar Atmosphere, Not a Full Dinner Service
Owner Hugh Corcoran, who launched The Yellow Bittern in 2024, announced the news via Instagram, emphasizing that the evening sessions are intended for a relaxed, wine-focused experience. The offering will include bottles of wine, pot au feu, and cheese with wheaten bread, rather than a comprehensive dinner menu. Corcoran stated: 'This is primarily for friends, colleagues and regulars to come by and have a glass with me in the evening. It is not aimed at people who want dinner or a restaurant experience and it is not for people who don’t like drinking wine. It is for those of us who enjoy drinking and conversation. So don’t expect much other than that.'
How to Book and What to Expect
Bookings for Friday evenings will be accepted only on the day itself and exclusively by phone, mirroring the restaurant's existing lunch reservation policy. The food will be simple: a slow-cooked French stew served from a large tureen, with broth, meat, and vegetables for those who wish to eat. The restaurant, located at 20 Caledonian Road, remains cash-only. For reservations, call 0203 342 2162.
The Yellow Bittern has garnered a loyal following for its distinctive French-Irish cuisine and its owner's uncompromising approach. This expansion into Friday evenings offers a rare opportunity for those unable to secure a lunch booking to experience the restaurant's unique atmosphere.
