The Sam Wanamaker Playhouse has announced its 2026/27 indoor winter season, running from October to March. The lineup includes two Shakespeare plays, one classic, and one new play, continuing the format established under artistic director Michelle Terry.
Julius Caesar Opens the Season
The season kicks off with Shakespeare's Julius Caesar (November 6 to February 14, 2027), directed by Joe Hill-Gibbins. Hill-Gibbins is known for provocative productions at the Young Vic, including a Measure for Measure set entirely of sex dolls. This history play explores democracy under threat and remains timely.
New Play and Chekhov Classic
Timberlake Wertenbaker's The Animals Come to the Table (December 11 to January 24, 2027) was originally submitted anonymously for the Globe's Burnt at the Stake festival in 2022. Now fully staged, it presents a surreal drama where animals put humanity on trial.
Chekhov's The Seagull (January 15 to April 10, 2027) reunites adaptor Rory Mullarkey and director Caroline Steinbeis, who previously collaborated on the 2025 Wanamaker production of Three Sisters.
King John Makes Wanamaker Debut
The season closes with King John (February 20 to April 11, 2027), a deep-cut Shakespeare history play about the medieval monarch forced to sign Magna Carta. Directed by Jaz Woodcock-Smith in her Globe debut, it will be the play's first performance at the Wanamaker. The Globe previously staged it outdoors in 2015.
Casting has not been announced, but Globe boss Michelle Terry may appear, possibly in Three Sisters.
Additional Programming and Tickets
Last year's festive musical Pinocchio will return for an outdoor winter run (November 28 to January 3, 2027). Tickets for the indoor season go on sale to the general public on July 14 at 10am.
