Rapper Receives Decade-Long Sentence for Fatal XL Bully Dog Attack
An aspiring rapper has been handed a prison sentence of ten years and three months after being convicted in connection with a horrific incident where two XL bully dogs mauled a grandmother to death. The court found Ashley Warren, 41, guilty of owning one of the dogs involved in the fatal attack on 68-year-old Esther Martin.
Tragic Events Unfold in Essex Home
Prosecutors detailed that Warren had asked Esther Martin, who stood at 5 feet 3 inches tall, to care for two XL bully dogs at his residence in Jaywick, Essex. This request was made so Warren could travel to London to film a music video. Tragically, on February 3, 2024, just two days after a nationwide ban on the XL bully breed took effect, the dogs launched a vicious attack that resulted in Ms. Martin's death.
The ban, which became law on February 1, 2024, makes it a criminal offense to own or possess an XL bully dog in England and Wales without an official certificate of exemption. Warren admitted in court that he did not hold such certificates and had not applied for any, despite previously suggesting to police that his dog had papers.
Court Hears Details of the Attack
During the trial at Chelmsford Crown Court, jurors heard that Warren left Ms. Martin alone with the two adult XL bully dogs and eight puppies of the same breed at his Hillman Avenue home. Prosecutor Christopher Paxton KC emphasized that this was done despite Ms. Martin's known mobility issues, lack of dog training experience, and minimal familiarity with being left alone with the animals for extended periods.
Hours after her arrival, Ms. Martin sustained what the court described as "dozens and dozens" of severe injuries. These included a bite that penetrated through the tissue of her arm and caused a complete fracture of the bone. Mr. Paxton told the jury, "It was, you may think, a tragedy waiting to happen, given the imbalance that arose between 68-year-old Esther, short in stature, and the towering power of these banned XL bully dogs."
Additional Charges and Sentencing
Warren was found guilty of being the owner of a dog named Bear, which caused injury resulting in death while dangerously out of control in a private place. However, he was acquitted of being in charge of a second dog named Beauty, which belonged to his girlfriend and was also involved in the attack.
In addition to the dog-related charges, Warren was convicted of possessing a bladed article without good reason or lawful authority at Clacton railway station on the same day as the attack. Officers discovered a knife that Warren claimed was a prop for the music video he had been filming in London.
The sentencing took place on Tuesday at Chelmsford Crown Court, where Warren, now residing in Addlestone, Surrey, received his prison term. The case has highlighted the severe consequences of violating the XL bully ban and the tragic outcomes that can result from irresponsible dog ownership.
