Trump Slams UK Over Airbase Delay for Iran Attacks

Trump Condemns UK's Hesitation on Airbase Access for Iran Military Action

Former US President Donald Trump has publicly criticized the United Kingdom for what he described as an excessive delay in allowing American forces to utilize UK airbases during recent attacks on Iran. In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, Trump emphasized that this hesitation "probably never happened between our countries before," suggesting it stemmed from legal concerns raised by British officials.

Disappointment Over Chagos Islands Sovereignty Deal

Trump also expressed being "very disappointed" in UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer regarding the British government's agreement to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. This deal aims to maintain the status of the UK-US airbase on Diego Garcia, part of the Indian Ocean archipelago. Initially supportive, Trump later reversed his stance, labeling the arrangement a "very woke thing" and arguing that Starmer should have retained ownership rather than ceding it to Mauritius.

The UK legislation to formalize this agreement is currently stalled in parliament following Trump's change of position, with Starmer stating it will not proceed without US approval. Trump contended that the islands' sovereignty should have been defended more aggressively, claiming Mauritius suddenly asserted ownership and that the UK failed to adequately challenge this.

Timing and Legal Concerns in Iran Strikes

Regarding the military strikes against Iran, which resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Trump noted that the UK did not initially permit the use of Diego Garcia or other airbases due to doubts about the legality of the operations. However, after Iran launched retaliatory attacks, including one on a UK base in Cyprus, Starmer revised this position. Trump argued the UK should have acted immediately, citing Iran's responsibility for casualties involving British citizens.

He described the operation as "well ahead of schedule," achieving leadership eliminations in one day instead of the anticipated weeks. While vague on specific goals, Trump mentioned aspirations for an Iranian uprising and potential talks with Khamenei's successors.

This incident highlights ongoing tensions in US-UK diplomatic and military coordination, with Trump's comments underscoring frustrations over procedural delays and strategic disagreements in handling international conflicts.
