XL Bully Owner Receives Decade-Long Sentence for Fatal Grandmother Attack
Ashley Warren has been sentenced to more than a decade in prison after his two XL bully dogs mauled grandmother Esther Martin to death in a horrific attack that lasted at least 12 minutes. The 68-year-old pensioner suffered catastrophic injuries during the sustained assault at a property on Hillman Avenue in Jaywick, Essex, in February 2024.
Attack Occurred Just After Nationwide Breed Ban
The fatal mauling took place merely two days after a comprehensive nationwide ban on XL bullies came into effect across England and Wales. This legislation made it illegal to own the breed without an official exemption certificate, following a concerning rise in severe dog attacks involving XL bullies prior to the prohibition.
Warren, an amateur musician from Addlestone in Surrey, displayed no visible emotion as Mr Justice Jeremy Johnson handed down a sentence of 10 years and three months at Chelmsford Crown Court. The judge characterized the incident as "foreseeable" and noted that it "had been foreseen by those who sought to warn" the defendant.
"Sustained and Repeated Attack" Lasted 12 Minutes
Prosecutors detailed that Ms Martin endured a "sustained and repeated attack" spanning a minimum of 12 minutes. The petite grandmother, standing just five-foot-three-inches tall with a history of medical complaints, had been invited to the address while Warren was in London recording a music video.
According to court testimony, Ms Martin fell over at the property, possibly while attempting to intervene in a fight between XL bully puppies. This triggered the two adult dogs to launch their brutal assault. Mr Justice Johnson stated she was "mauled to death" suffering "dozens of bites" in the process. The aggression was so extreme that police officers were initially unable to enter the premises.
Family Statements Express Anger and Grief
Esther Martin's children delivered powerful victim impact statements during the sentencing hearing. Daughter Sonia Martin expressed her enduring anger toward Warren, revealing he "made social media posts and sang about XL bullies, saying that he missed them."
"I can't ever forgive Ashley Warren for his role in my mum's death and hold him entirely responsible for the pain and suffering during her long death," she declared. "I [will] forever hold him responsible. I hold him responsible for putting his needs above those of others and his actions will reverberate throughout our family forever."
Another child, Kelly Fretwell, paid heartfelt tribute to her mother's character: "She had the best sense of humour ever and wicked laughter. She had the kindest smile."
Courtroom Disorder and Legal Proceedings
The sentencing hearing briefly descended into chaos when several individuals in the public gallery began shouting toward Warren in the secure dock. One onlooker yelled "shut your mouth" before security personnel intervened and removed multiple people from the courtroom. Officers remained stationed nearby for the remainder of the proceedings.
Warren was convicted of owning a dog dangerously out of control causing injury resulting in death, along with possession of a knife. He was acquitted of a separate charge of being in charge of a dog that was out of control causing injury resulting in death.
Prosecutor Chris Paxton KC informed the court that Warren had nine previous convictions for 15 offences, including:
- Robbery
- Assault occasioning actual bodily harm
- Affray
Defense and Sentencing Details
Defense barrister Allan Compton acknowledged the tragedy, stating: "The facts and circumstances of Esther's death are simply awful and I recognise the pain and hurt to so many people has been caused as a result of what happened."
He added that Warren "was his genuine belief having looked after the dogs for over a year that they were not aggressive. There was nothing in that lived experience to tell him that they were capable of that reaction that occurred so tragically."
The sentence comprised 10 years imprisonment for the dog offence with an additional three months consecutive for the knife offence. Warren will serve 40 percent of this term in custody before being released on licence for the remainder.
