A woman has shared her surprise after spotting a luxury car submerged in the sea just two miles from Bear Grylls' private island. The Land Rover Discovery is believed to have been left on a beach in the coastal village of Abersoch, Wales, before being swallowed by the incoming tide.
Discovery of the Vehicle
The £80,000 4x4 was seen floating in the water with a tow rope attached. A paddleboarder, 45, noticed the car at around 7:30am on Sunday, May 3, about two hours before high tide. She informed her husband, who was walking his dog and used his drone to photograph the car as it sank beneath the waves.
The paddleboarder then filmed herself rowing over the car, which was completely submerged by 8:55am. 'It's gone mental in this tiny little Welsh village,' she said. 'I don't know whose car it is.'
Recovery Operation
Workers from a local farm used 'about three tractors and diggers' to pull the car out. The paddleboarder noted, 'Everyone thinks it's hilarious, wonderful – there was a big crowd watching it being pulled out, but still no one knows whose it is.'
She speculated the car must have been placed on the beach the night before, as low tide was around 4:30am. 'Because of the tide, you know there was some kind of foul play on the beach at night, around 3 or 4am, for the tide to come in over it,' she added. 'It happens, but they usually get towed out. Because it was the middle of the night, it didn't. It did have a tow rope on the back that was floating up out of the water, so maybe someone tried to pull it out.'
Proximity to Bear Grylls' Island
The car was spotted near Saint Tudwal's Island West, purchased by adventurer Bear Grylls for £95,000 in 2001. The island, about 700m long and 200m wide, is a haven for marine life. Grylls previously told Vanity Fair, 'It has a little lighthouse beside our house and is surrounded by amazing sea cliffs, seals, and dolphins. It is my favourite place on the planet!'
