JD Wetherspoon has issued a statement after a video emerged showing a manager at one of its pubs in Braintree, Essex, refusing to serve supporters of the Reform UK party. The incident, which was filmed and shared online, has sparked widespread criticism and calls for action.
Video Shows Confrontation
In the footage, a man filming can be heard saying, 'I can't have a drink,' before asking the manager, 'Because you're deciding that?' The employee responds, 'I've decided, yes.' Another man then asks, 'So you're refusing to serve Reform supporters?' The manager confirms the refusal and thanks them before the interaction ends.
Wetherspoon's Response
Following the video going viral, Wetherspoon released a statement clarifying its position. A spokesperson said: 'Wetherspoon welcomes supporters of all political parties. In fact, the leaders of Reform have regularly used our pubs in Clacton and Skegness.' The statement added that politics can 'raise strong emotions' and that the chain has asked all parties to use its pubs on a 'social basis, rather than a political one, to maintain good order and comply with licensing obligations.'
The spokesperson further explained: 'In this case, enthusiastic Reform supporters were filming outside the pub and parked their bus in the pub's loading bay. As indicated, Reform supporters and other political supporters are welcome.'
Online Backlash
The manager's actions have angered many online. One Essex Reform supporter wrote: 'Absolutely disgusting. I'd sack him.' Others vowed to boycott Wetherspoon, tagging owner Tim Martin in posts and urging him to take action. The incident comes shortly after Reform UK leader Nigel Farage criticized a postman who allegedly discarded Reform flyers, calling it 'disturbing.'
In a separate development, a screenshot from a private Facebook group for Royal Mail staff showed a post claiming a worker had binned Reform leaflets. Farage tweeted: 'It is right that @RoyalMail has launched a full investigation into this allegation. If found to be true, it would be very disturbing and an attack on the democratic process itself.' Royal Mail confirmed it was investigating and stated it 'does not tolerate the deliberate non-delivery of mail.'
Reform UK has demanded a thorough internal investigation within three days and a full written explanation from Royal Mail.
