13-Year-Old Girl Faces Extensive Charges in Melbourne Court Case
A 13-year-old girl, whose identity is protected by law, appeared in a Victorian children's court on Monday, seeking bail while confronting 109 serious charges. The charges include reckless conduct endangering serious injury, theft, motor vehicle theft, and burglary, stemming from a series of alleged incidents that have shocked the local community.
Alleged Targeting of Jewish Community Members
Police revealed that the teenager allegedly targeted members of the Jewish community in multiple events. In one incident on March 30, she was reportedly behind the wheel of a stolen car in Brighton, a suburb in Melbourne's south-east. Authorities claim she attempted to hit a cyclist with the passenger door, leading to an argument before the car was driven into the 45-year-old man, knocking him to the ground.
Detective Senior Constable Jarryd Grey informed the court that shortly after this altercation, the girl conducted a Google search to find out the sentence for running someone over. "It's quite troubling ... we realised it's premeditated," he stated, highlighting the deliberate nature of her actions.
Social Media Notoriety and Escalating Offences
According to police, the teen thrived on notoriety and was deeply invested in the social media reaction to her alleged crimes. "She thinks it gives her status in her group which is really concerning," Detective Grey noted. Her alleged offending has escalated significantly, with prosecutors reporting an average of 1.45 offences per day over 74 days.
The court heard about other disturbing incidents, including antisemitic remarks shouted at pedestrians in Hampton, Ripponlea, and Caulfield, and swerving a car towards a Jewish family in Ripponlea, forcing them to run for cover. A web search for "where do Jews live" was found on her phone, indicating targeted behavior against the Jewish community.
Bail Denied Due to Community Risk
In arguing for bail, the girl's defence lawyer mentioned that youth justice had agreed to supervise her and report any breaches. He added that she expressed willingness to return to school after the holidays. However, the magistrate denied bail, stating, "the risk to the community is overwhelming." The prosecutor emphasized that her actions had reached a peak where she was "weaponising" stolen cars at the risk of road users.
The girl is scheduled to face the court again on May 4, as the legal proceedings continue to unfold in this high-profile case.
