Shakespeare's Globe has exclusively announced its 2026/27 indoor winter season for the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, featuring four productions running from November 2026 to April 2027. The season includes two Shakespeare plays, one classic, and one new play, continuing the programming pattern established under artistic director Michelle Terry.
Julius Caesar opens the season
The season kicks off with Julius Caesar (Nov 6-Feb 14 2027), directed by Joe Hill-Gibbins, known for provocative productions at the Young Vic including a Measure for Measure set entirely of sex dolls. This history play, one of Shakespeare's most beloved, explores democracy under attack and remains timely.
New play by Timberlake Wertenbaker
Following is The Animals Come to the Table (Dec 11-Jan 24 2027) by veteran British playwright Timberlake Wertenbaker. Originally submitted anonymously in shorter form for the Globe's Burnt at the Stake festival in 2022, this surreal drama sees animals putting humanity on trial. The full-length version will premiere at the Wanamaker.
Chekhov's The Seagull reunites creative team
In the new year, The Seagull (Jan 15-Apr 10 2027) by Anton Chekhov will be staged in a production reuniting adaptor Rory Mullarkey and director Caroline Steinbeis, who previously collaborated on the acclaimed 2025 Wanamaker production of Three Sisters.
King John makes Wanamaker debut
The season concludes with King John (Feb 20-Apr 11 2027), a Shakespeare deep cut focused on the medieval monarch forced to sign Magna Carta. This pageantry-heavy history play has been performed only once by the Globe in the modern era, outdoors in 2015. It will make its Wanamaker debut directed by Jaz Woodcock-Smith, also making her Globe debut.
Pinocchio returns outdoors
Additionally, last year's festive musical Pinocchio returns for an outdoor winter run (Nov 28-Jan 3 2027). Casting for the season has not been announced, but Globe boss Michelle Terry may appear.
Tickets go on sale to the general public on July 14 at 10am.
