A reader has declared they will not purchase Grand Theft Auto 6 due to its digital-only release, expressing frustration over what they perceive as Rockstar Games' attempt to maximize profits at the expense of consumer choice. The reader, Taylor Moon Arrow, argues that the decision to omit a disc version is a manipulative strategy to drive players toward digital purchases and microtransactions.
Reader's Stance on Physical Media
Taylor Moon Arrow states, 'I’m honestly not buying GTA 6 because it’s digital-only.' They emphasize a strong belief in physical media and a dislike for being coerced by a billion-dollar company. 'Not only do I believe in physical media but I don’t like being manipulated into doing what a giant, billion dollar company wants me to, just so they can make an extra buck,' they wrote in a Reader's Feature for GameCentral.
The reader acknowledges that many people talk about boycotts and petitions but expects few to resist the game's allure. 'Maybe I’ll cave in too, but at the moment I’m committed to not getting it,' they admit, though they would reconsider if a rumored disc version releases in December.
Pricing and Microtransactions Concerns
Before the announcement, rumors suggested GTA 6 could cost £100, but Rockstar opted for a lower price. The reader believes this is a calculated move to encourage online engagement and spending on microtransactions. 'They want to get people online and spending money on microtransactions and people aren’t going to flock quite as much to it if the price is so high,' they explain.
Additionally, the Ultimate Edition includes exclusive story content behind a paywall, which the reader criticizes as going beyond fair cosmetic items. 'They could’ve just done cosmetics and cars and weapons, which would have been fair enough (up to a point) but they went further and put story content behind a paywall,' they note.
Digital-Only Strategy Criticized
The reader argues that the lack of a disc version allows Rockstar to keep all revenue instead of sharing with retailers. 'Why share a cut of sales with shops when you can take it all for yourself?' they ask, calling the move anti-consumer. They also point out that Rockstar delayed GTA 6 due to ongoing profits from GTA Online, noting that 'there was only five years between GTA 4 and 5' partly because GTA 4 lacked a live service mode.
Taylor Moon Arrow concludes by vowing not to buy microtransactions if they do purchase the game, stating, 'I don’t want to be a pawn in some accountant’s spreadsheet, I just want to buy and own a game, and play it on my own terms.'
